HP

Im sat on the sofa and my gaze wanders onto the HP sauce bottle. Ive never looked at it properly but I've just realised that the space has been made into the houses of parliament and Big Ben silhouette. Clever. So does this mean that it stands for Houses of Parliament sauce??

  1. If you look at older bottle designs they all have the Houses of Parliament on them. Originaly devoped in Nottingham by Fred Garton he changed the name to HP Sauce when he heard a rumour that a restaurant in the houses had started serving it - bless his proud heart!

  2. Wow I've never even considered that or looked at it properly. I'll just go and raid my cupboards now to see what else I've been missing...

  4. no all wrong, my grandmother on my mothers side was freds niece, fred had a grocers in nottingham his wife made lots of lovely home produced items sauces and pickles etc, HP was short for Home Produced (early bottles have Gartons HP on them),Mr garton had a large vinegar debt in those days you had vinegar deliverd in large amounts so you could pickle and make produce, the owner of the vinegar factory offerd to forgo the debt if he would sell him the sauce receipe that was so popular,so Fred sold the receipe, the vinegar factory boss mass produced this and it became popular in the houses of Parliment, so he put the picture of the houses of parliment of the labels.
